Welcome to BlackFamilyLiving!

Being an African American in America offers many challenges. Though we are Americans, we have a unique culture within that is rich, in history, in character and in belief. The diversity of our culture is worthy of sharing with others in our mutual goals toward genuine peace and understanding among all races. Our experiences, dreams and hopes for the future lift us up as a people and allows others to understand where we're coming from and where we want to go.

There are many perspectives on the condition of the Black Family in America today.  A most recent commentary offered by columnist William Raspberry examines "Why our Black Families are Failing".  This is a discourse on the historical journey of the African American family and examines "...(the) crisis of unprecedented magnitude in the black community, one that goes to the very heart of its survival".  It is a very insightful article that seeks to promote better understanding of the issues that affect us.

More Perspectives on the African American Experience in America

Another perspective on Black Family life today digs close to the root of perception about African American family issues and generating solutions.  In "Supporting Black Families", author Robert B. Hill, Ph.D wrote in the Family Resource Coalition's *Report*:

"What approaches are needed to enhance the social and economic functioning of African American families? Unfortunately, many observers wrongly believe that the problems of inner-city families are intractable. Conventional accounts of black families in the news media, for example, devote considerable space to citing many negative statistics to document the severity of the crisis. By blaming the victim--attributing the crisis to internal deficits or weaknesses such as female-headed families and poor work ethic rather than to external constraints such as racism, exodus of industries from inner-cities, and so on--they focus on identifying problems and not on generating solutions."

Dr. Andrew Manis, of Macon's Center for Racial Understanding and author of "Macon Black and White" has an eye-opening article that sheds light on some of White america's historically held views and beliefs. He is a white author, who writes a really a profound article that begs the question "When Are WE Going to Get Over It?". It is an article that not only exposes, but offers solutions.
